This unique course in Poland, created in 2017, combines theoretical education with industrial practice.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
The Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Industry programme is a 2-year practical second-degree programme run at the Faculty of Pharmacy within the Department of Laboratory Medicine.
The aim of education in this field is to prepare graduates for a career in enterprises producing medicinal products, medical devices, cosmetics and dietary supplements. Theoretical classes take place at the Medical University of Gdansk, while practical subjects are taught at the university by professionals employed in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. The programme also includes a 9-week internship at Polpharma’s production facilities and laboratories for each student.
Dual studies, combining theory and practice, are in line with the intent of the reform of higher education, which involves expanding and deepening cooperation between science and business. Universities in Scandinavian countries and Western Europe, which achieve high rates of economic innovation, have been developing a similar educational path for many years.
Already at the beginning of their career path, students will have higher skills, will be better adapted to the profession and focused on specific and practical challenges in the pharmaceutical industry – Bożenna Kozakiewicz, Vice President of the Management Board of Polpharma responsible for research and development.
Students of the new faculty will be able to develop their chemical and biological knowledge with an emphasis on practical methods for the industrial production of medicines and cosmetics, as well as their quality control, marketing authorisation as well as distribution and marketing. The subjects taught include formulation technology, drug and cosmetics analysis, biotechnology, pharmacology and toxicology, legislation, pre-registration testing and technology transfer, and good manufacturing and distribution practice. Twenty-four employees of Polpharma will be lecturers, in addition to experts from the university.
Studies began on October 1, 2017. Graduates with either a first degree and/or a Master’s degree in fields related to biology, chemistry, physics or medicine can enrol in the programme.
